Disperser
Ableton Live rack based on a stacked EQ3 phase-dispersion technique for liquid, rubbery transients.

Overview
Disperser is an Ableton Live rack that recreates the well-known phase-dispersion effect — the same style you may know from the Kilohearts Disperser plugin — but built entirely with stock EQ3 modules.
I first encountered this technique on a Mr. Bill podcast and immediately integrated it into my workflow. It’s not identical to the original plugin, but the perceptual result is similar, and in some mixes I prefer how this version behaves.
How It Works
EQ3 is a minimum-phase device. Each crossover introduces a small phase rotation. On its own this is subtle, but when you stack multiple EQ3s in series, those rotations accumulate and become audible.
The result is a liquid, rubbery deformation of the transient — almost as if the attack is bending or smearing in time.
What It Does
Disperser reshapes transients rather than simply boosting or reducing them.
It works especially well on:
- impacts and cinematic hits
- percussive synths
- tight bass stabs
- plucks and short tonal material
- anything with a clear, fast attack
Depending on the source, the effect can range from subtle (a rounded, elastic transient) to extreme (a splashing, synthetic, phase-bent character).
If you’ve listened to the preview of Quad Damage, many of the impacts and transitional synth hits use this exact technique.
How to Use It
- Drop the rack onto a track.
- Listen to how it affects the transient.
- Adjust the crossover frequency only if needed — most of the time, no tweaking is required.
Often it either works instantly or isn’t suitable for that sound.
Why It’s Useful
Disperser gives you a unique transient signature that’s difficult to achieve using compression, saturation, or EQ alone. It’s ideal when a sound feels too static, when the attack isn’t cutting through interestingly, or when you want a more synthetic or bio-mechanical edge. It also helps cinematic impacts feel more “designed” and deliberate.
